Does the U.S. Electoral College elect the president and vice president or do the citezens?

I have to answer "Should the Electoral College be abolished"? for my essay midterm but Im not sure what it does or why we would think it should be abolished! PLEASE EXPLAIN IN A WAY A THIRTEEN WOULD UNDERSTAND! Not old people language please!
