What happened to the weak central government idea stated in the constitution?

Crapitalism happened. Corporations were despised by the founding fathers, but once they started gaining strength, the government had to become stronger to protect us from them. Unfortunately, stupid people sometimes vote for Republicans who make the government a tool of the corporations it is supposed to keep in line.
